The Danish mathematician Jakob Nielsen won international
recognitionas one of the developers of combinatiorial group theory
and the topologyof surfaces. This article describes the life and
work of Jakob Nielsenwith emphasis on his contributions to
topology.The biography is to be included in the book "The History
of Topology",edited by Ioan M. James, and planned for publication
by Elsevier Science(North-Holland). |
