Cryptology

Cryptology (or cryptography) is about secrecy and authentication.

There is an increasing need for ensuring secrecy and authentication in communications today.

Modern cryptography

Numerous daily live actions have to be secured using modern cryptography, such as when you surf on the Internet, when you talk on your mobile phone and when you open your car.

Research efforts

We are a world leading research group in the field of symmetric cryptography, and we concentrate our research efforts on the following disciplines:

  • symmetric encryption
  • cryptographic hashing
  • message authentication
  • Boolean functions

At the forefront of prestigious competition

DTU Mathematics and Graz University of Technology researchers are the architects behind a cryptographic system, ’Grøstl’, participating in a competition to become a standard American government system.

The system is a so-called ’hash function’ for compression of data.  You use these functions when you log on to your online bank with your digital signature or NemID.

Out of 64 systems only five are still in the competition, and the ‘Grøstl’ system is one of them. The competition is managed by the American standardisation organization, NIST.
