Mathematicians put crowds on formula

By the help of soldiers from the “Antvorskov Kaserne” barracks, DTU mathematicians have proved that their models can predict the movements of human flows.

One morning in May the DTU mathematicians ask the two groups of cavalry soldiers from the Slagelse-based barracks Antvorskov Kaserne to set aside all their military discipline and behave like normal civilians.

Soldiers in experiment

The soldiers test if the models and algorithms that DTU Mathematics would like to apply to predict the movements of human flows actually fit in with reality.

Lizette’s ida

The mathematicians behind the experiment are the two DTU Mathematics associate professors Poul G. Hjorth and Jens Starke as well as DTU MSc student Lizette Petersen.

It was Lizette’s idea to carry out the test at the barracks. She has previously been hussar of the Household Troops in Slagelse, and she is going to use the data in her thesis.
