General course objectives:
The goal with the course is to allow the students to integrate their technical MMC skills with the theoretical knowledge of economy and management they have acquired in 42490, through work with a case defined by the students.
|A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:|
- Formulate and define a project
- Document whether a project can be practically and economically realized
- Plan the course of a project with milestones
- Analyze roles and phases in a project
- Document experience from a project
- Present results from a project orally and written
- Put obtained results in perspective with respect to current technologies and state of the art.
- Carry through a project that academically belongs to the MMC master programme.
Groups of students take contact to a supervisor and write a group contract and a project idea. The idea can originate from the student or be offered by the supervisor. The setting of the project is to perform a well defined pilot study of, for instance, a research project or the development of a new product within a company. This study should be of a scope so that it can form the basis of an evaluation as to whether the project should be funded (by research council, company management, or the like), both with respect to purely technical matters as well as with respect to organizational and economical matters.
The project groups work on making a proof of concept, that is, a proto type or a simplified model to decide the technical feasibility of the project.
Then they formulate the goals of the project and work out a schedule with milestones that can be verified. During the project work the group write reports on progress and fulfillment of the milestones. Finally, each group hands in a final report and gives a presentation, which is followed by an oral exam.
The final report must contain a description of the process.
To fulfill the requirements of the technical level, all result from the project must be documented.
